Gas Prices, Mass Transit, and Property Value

Dear Senator Larson,

I hope you’re not deaf to anything that isn’t strictly called “collective bargaining rights.”

Equally pressing is the state’s mass transit infrastructure, which will only become more important as gas prices continue to rise.  The days of $2/gallon are long gone.

Commuter activity WILL change.  This will happen VERY FAST and will affect both property values and the demand for transit options.

Without funding for transit options, the suburbs and rural areas that support Scott Walker will be even worse off than the cities.  While neighborhoods like Milwaukee’s East Side will thrive because homes, jobs, busses, and entertainment are close together, high gasoline prices will cut off many parts of the state from the more urbanized centers of economic activity.

Property values in the suburbs will fall because the cost of commuting (or going to the grocery store) will make these neighborhoods less attractive.  People will want to live closer to work and in places that offer multiple personal mobility options.

The rail money Scott Walker gave back to Washington was short-sighted, but his proposal for state transit funding is outrageous.  The loss of federal dollars will be catastrophic, and you have to explain to people that is isn’t just the loss of a subsidy.  Nobody understands how heavily roads are subsidized.

Transit should not be funded like a social service.  It will only become more important in the near future.

Please make a lot of noise about this.  It’s as important as anything in the proposed budget.

Dear David,

Thank you for your words of encouragement and for contacting me
regarding Governor Walker’s use of the Budget Adjustment Bill to reverse
50 years of Wisconsin history in preserving worker rights.  I have been
overwhelmed with the outpouring of public support.

As you know, Senate Democrats have chosen to stand with Wisconsin
workers and unions. We ask that the Republican majority reconsider their
unprecedented attack on Wisconsin workers, their communities and our
tradition of working with labor to move Wisconsin forward. We ask simply
that they come to the bargaining table and address the concerns of so
many from across Wisconsin.

Beyond stripping away rights, this bill will also give the governor the
unchecked authority to make dramatic cuts to the state’s safety net
programs like Badgercare and Seniorcare. It even gives the governor the
ability to sell off 36 state-owned power plants using NO BID contracts.
Now that we have seen the Governor’s budget, we know that his Wisconsin
is simply a land of less opportunity. His slash and burn budget
specifically attacks education, the environment, transportation, and
will prevent local governments from providing vital community services.

I appreciate your support in the fight ahead of us.

The rubber-stamp Republican Legislature is doing everything they can to
railroad the governor’s radical agenda through the Legislature. Please
continue your advocacy with him as well as with your friends and
community. We need you to let your neighbors know that his assault on
worker rights, will hurt every person and every community across
Wisconsin. It will drive down wages and decrease work place safety for
all Wisconsin workers, union and non-union alike.

While rallies continue at the capitol, our fight has moved to every
community in the state.  Legislative compromise and moderation seems
unlikely until the faces change.

Thank you again for emailing me and for joining me in opposing Governor
Walker on this crucial issue.

In Solidarity,

Chris Larson
State Senator
7th District
